NOTES ON THE HISTORIC BUILDING

The building housing The Black Bull Company is an important historic landmark in Hobson.  Built in 1911 by Mr. Murray, the structure of the building is locally formed cement block.  Originally, the building housed The First National Bank of Hobson as well a number of other enterprises.

Throughout the years, “the Murray building” accommodated office suites and boarding house rooms on the second and third story.  Many old timers still recall the bachelors that resided in the apartments, as well as the doctor, dentist and lawyer.

The building also housed a pool hall, bowling alley, Masonic lodge and butcher shop.  At one point, the second story was the basketball court for the Hobson Tiger High School teams.

A stage for live theater as well as movies, and a spacious seating area dominate the second floor, with the vintage theater seats still on display.  The original theater was known as the Hobson Opera House.  Signatures of the actors dating back to the early 1920’s can be seen gracing the walls of the “green room”.  When you stop by The Black Bull Company, ask for a tour of this historic landmark.  It is truly a delight to share this piece of Montana history with visitors.  Dreams for the future involve restoration of the upstairs portion of this building.

 WHAT YOU WILL SEE TODAY

For the past 40 years the building has been used as a bar and restaurant changing owners several times.  In 1999, the building and liquor license were put up for public auction.  A group of local ranchers, recognizing the historic value of the building and the importance to the community of the local meeting place, made the decision to purchase and operate the business as a saloon and steak house.

RENOVATION OF THE HISTORIC PROPERTY

Keeping in mind the historic value of the building it was decided to renovate the property in 2001.

Attention was paid to maintaining the integrity of the original historical building as well as using local materials to create a fresh, new casual country feeling.

Touring the building, you can see the original bank vault in use today as the walk-in cooler in the saloon.  The original ornate tin ceilings have been restored and remain in place throughout the main floor; the current owners have restored the hardwood maple flooring as well.  The windows have been restored to their original grand size, illuminating the dining room and saloon with natural light.

In 2007, the Stevenson family, wanting to focus their attention on raising cattle, sold the Black Bull Saloon and Steakhouse, including the land and building, to the Reese family. Barry, Sabrina and Brandon Reese are now the new owners.
